Periothèque Routines

Composition for piano and electronics (delay and looper) (2016)

Music technology has always fascinated me, and as a guitarist, I've built up a collection of devices that allow me to manipulate the sound of my instrument. These effects pedals can produce subtle changes to timbre or produce wild transformations that make the instrument almost indistinguishable. I gravitated towards looping and delay effects in particular because you could create layers that made you sound like multiple players. For this piece, I set out to explore the use of these pieces of technology with the piano, which similarly uses pedals, but in different ways.

Material for the piece developed out of a few compositions from a weekly production project called Weekly Beats 2016. This also influenced the title, which is somewhat of a play on words suggesting the fusion of technology and repetitive tasks.

Songpedia

Songpedia is a set of songs focused on well-known musicians and theorists from ancient and medieval periods. Many fascinating musical developments occurred over the stretch of those years. Although the subject matter is interesting and engaging, it can be particularly challenging to remember many of the details as presented in a music history course. I set out to write these songs as supplemental material for study. Simplicity and brevity keep each song focused on the main points; they are like encyclopedia entries accompanied by music. Formerly titled, "r2fifty2," this album started as a weekly song project in 2013.

The Mineral Kingdom

The Mineral Kingdom is the domain of Matthew Joseph Payne and his comrades-in-arms; a little bit jazz, a little bit doom metal, a little bit bluegrass, a little bit chamber music and a whole lotta chiptune make up the soundtrack of these lands. Matt plugs away at his banjo and accordion, Ryan Rey rips the guitar, Michael Booker and Meerenai Shim weave a tapestry of woodwinds and VCO Vault provides the kingdom’s visual landscape with his own custom GifSlap software while a legion of GameBoys, PSPs and other gizmos hold down the backbone. Join us by the fire, and be mesmerized by the storytelling, the wild beats, the lurid virtuosity. Or, just dance.

Antagony

Antagony was an American extreme metal band from the Bay Area of California, formed in 1999 and disbanded in 2009. Antagony has released three albums, each on a different record label. Members of Antagony have gone on to form bands such as Oblivion, All Shall Perish, Hacksaw to the Throat, The Zenith Passage, and Connoisseur.

Weekly Beats 2014

Weekly Beats is a 52 week long music project in which artists compose and publicly release 1 song a week for the entire year (this happens every other year). For this project, inspiration and influences come from a variety of sources ranging from concert music to heavy metal, as well as visual media like film and videogames. For Weekly Beats 2014, most tracks begin as a single pattern/idea which then gets manipulated over many layers, getting tweaked here and there for a more humanistic touch. This release is a selection from of the original project. (There are also releases for 2016 and 2018)
